Praxis II Elementary Education: Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment (5017) Practice Test

The significant benefit of specialized instruction in art, music, and physical education is that it often leads to higher performance in other subject areas. Engaging in these specialized disciplines can enhance a student’s cognitive abilities, creativity, and emotional expression, all of which contribute positively to overall academic achievement.

Research has indicated that involvement in the arts and physical education can improve memory, critical thinking skills, and problem-solving capabilities. For instance, music education has been linked to better verbal and mathematical skills, while physical activity is known to enhance focus and concentration in the classroom. Consequently, students who participate in specialized programs often exhibit improved performance in traditional academic subjects like math, science, and language arts, as these areas can benefit from the skills developed through artistic and physical engagement.

In contrast, while increased independence in students and a reduced need for standardized testing may be positive outcomes of specialized instruction, they do not directly relate to the core benefit of enhancing performance across the academic curriculum. Additionally, a greater focus on academic subjects does not leverage the advantages that specialized instruction provides; instead, it might lead to a more narrow educational experience that neglects the holistic development of students.
